Pregnancy is an amazing thing.
How can we fully appreciate this incredible journey, with all its anticipation and excitement, while also gracefully adapting to the physical transformations it inevitably brings without compromising our personal style?
As a woman who’s considered “plus size”, the changes it brings, and the dreaded weight gain, often feel daunting.
When I delivered my last baby, Skye, I swore that I’d make a ton of changes so as to not have to be so plus-sized by my next pregnancy – especially when it seemed to cause prenatal hypertension in both my pregnancies. Or so the doctors told me.
I’m no doctor, but come on. No woman needs to hear that her weight is what’s causing XYZ – especially during such a vulnerable time.
I’m not denying that it can play a factor in increased health risks, but if you’re like me at all, you’re probably already aware that it’s something you may need to work on, but still not appreciate being “told” the obvious…
Well, here we are, about two and a half years later, and I’m a plus-sized pregnant woman for the third time! 🙂 🙂 🙂
I can say however, that due to implementing some of my own advice, some of which is on this here blog….(check out: Boost Your Self-Worth | 18 Tips For Self-Improvement & Positive Growth)… some of the changes I *have* made in the last two years seem to have done the trick in the hypertension department!
I am proud to say I am 34 weeks and my blood pressure has been normal throughout my entire pregnancy. *happy dance!*
I digress – This blog post is my way to celebrate the beauty that can be found in plus-size women, and more specifically in plus-size pregnancy.
I want to share some ways I decided to not let the weight gain get to me (mentally) this go around and how there are some great tips I’ve found in embracing my curves with confidence specifically through finding stylish and COMFORTABLE maternity clothing.
The Ultimate Guide To Plus Size Maternity Fashion
Celebrate Your Curves!
Before diving into the world of maternity fashion, let’s talk about what I mean by embracing curves.
It’s important to remember that pregnancy is a time of transformation because our body is doing miraculous things to nurture and protect a literal human that we’re growing in our womb!
Just remembering the fact that my body is doing something so wonderful, really helps me to celebrate my body and appreciate its changing shape – even if it’s bigger than my already kinda bigger normal.
You Gotta Find The Right Fit!
When it comes to maternity fashion, fit is everything!
I’ve definitely struggled to find that perfect fit at times, but it’s important to find clothes that flatter your curves and (a super important rule for me) are comfortable too!
I don’t know if this applies to everyone out there, but I’m pretty sure it’s relatable to a lot of us pregnant women – pregnancy can be freaking uncomfortable!
You don’t want to wear something just because it’s fashionable but end up totally miserable because it’s not comfortable.
Look for clothing that has stretchy, breathable fabrics that will accommodate your growing bump and provide ample breathing room for yourself and what your daily demands are.
Embrace The Comfy!
As mentioned above, comfort is EVERYTHING.
Opt for maternity clothes that prioritize comfort. We’re lucky right now, because thankfully with the fashion trends of lounge outfits and baggy clothes being in right now, this doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice style for comfort!
From flowy maxi dresses and soft jersey tops to stretchy leggings and cozy knitwear, there are plenty of stylish options that will keep you feeling comfortable and confident throughout your pregnancy journey.
One of my ultimate favorite pants that I keep in multiple colors are these joggers from Kindred Bravely.
O.M.G!!!!!
They’re so comfortable! but still stylish enough to wear outside the home if you’re going for a super casual look.
They also come in multiple colors too! so…BONUS!
Highlight Your BEST Features
Pregnancy is a perfect time to really embrace your bump and accentuate your curves by wearing clothing that doesn’t hide your body!
Experiment with clothing that shows off your favorite features – whether that’s a form-fitting dress, or a belted top that cinches at the waist. There’s so many ways you can work this.
Play With Patterns And Colors!
Ever heard that using bright colors in your wardrobe can increase your mood? Well, what’s a more perfect time than now to do just that?
Don’t be afraid to play with patterns and bright colors to express your personal style during your pregnancy.
While black may be slimming, don’t feel limited to dark colors. This was always my go-to for a big part of my life, but I found it didn’t compliment me like I thought it did.
Experiment with bold prints, vibrant hues, and even playful patterns to add a POP to your maternity wardrobe.
When utilized this way, fashion can be pretty fun.
Invest In Maternity Essentials
I’m not someone who has the ability currently to just buy a new outfit for every day of the week, so it’s important to remember to get items that can be worn in many different ways AND be worn throughout many IF NOT ALL stages of your pregnancy!
You may also know these as capsule pieces.
Focus on some staple pieces like comfortable maternity jeans with stretchy waistbands, basic tees or tanks for layering (getting a few different colors can help too!), and of course, don’t forget a supportive bra or two that supports your back.
Accessorize With CONFIDENCE!
I love accessories!
Accessories have a way to really make a somewhat simple outfit, become a statement!
Wearing a bold scarf or utilizing a stylish handbag that’s the same color as your shoes can totally transform your look!
Don’t underestimate the power of accessories especially when it comes to boosting your confidence.
Shopping for Plus-Size Maternity Wear
Fortunately, there are more options now it seems than even a few years ago when it comes to shopping for plus-size maternity fashion.
It felt so daunting when I was pregnant with my first to find anywhere that offered cute clothes for pregnancy, that were also my size.
Many retailers now offer dedicated maternity lines specifically designed for plus-size moms-to-be.
Some of my favorites are Torrid, Lane Bryant, Maurices, and of course Amazon (I mean, the selection is endless). I do have to say I love the Try Before You Buy option that Amazon has on many pieces too!
I’m always coming across more great options for the plus size styles in general, so I’ll be sure to share more if I find any I just love!
Though I still think there’s total room for growth in this area, as many of these maternity selections are itty-bitty… the rise of plus-size options in general (not just that of maternity) has made it easier to shop.
How you may ask? Well, many plus-size clothing that’s not technically “maternity” can still be worn by a pregnant plus-size woman. Sometimes this just means sizing up a bit.
Embrace Body Positivity!
Embracing confidence in our bodies may always come with some struggle.
But it’s so important to remember that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. Just because I’m not the size I was in high school (by a long shot!), doesn’t mean I’m not still beautiful as I am now.
Surround yourself with positivity and support, and celebrate your body’s ability to grow that precious babe!
The journey of motherhood is not easy, starting with the pregnancy in general, but you’re rocking it.
In Conclusion:
As a plus-sized mom-to-be, navigating the journey of pregnancy without having to sacrifice style is such an empowering experience.
With the right mindset and versatile wardrobe, you can rock your journey with confidence and grace.
Just look at how adorable some of these options are! They’re so fun to wear, and I can say each piece is COMFORTABLE too!
I love the romper and block color tops so much.
I totally swear by the Hey Dude shoes too, they’re featherlight and so easy to slip on which is a big one for me because I can hardly reach my feet right now (hahahahaha 🙂 🙂 :))
Let me know what you think! Or drop a comment if you end up trying any of these styles! I’d love to see them on you!
