Overcoming Social Anxiety. Is this something anyone can really “overcome?”. Well, the good news is… it’s definitely something you can “make better!”, as for overcoming it completely. I’ll keep you posted!
I am so awkward. Like SO so awkward.
Especially around people I don’t know… Small talk? Forget it. I just radiate what I feel on the inside and probably end up coming across as super rude (hello RBF!)
Social anxiety is a common challenge many individuals face. Or so i’m told.
It can hinder personal growth, career advancements, and the ability to form meaningful relationships. But, with the right strategies, i’m learning it is possible to overcome social anxiety and foster self-confidence.
In this post, I wanted to share some actionable tips and techniques that can *and have for me* help you transform your social interactions and build a more confident you.
I’m doing this with you. So at least there’s that.
Overcoming Social Anxiety Is Possible, But First We Must Understand It.
“Social anxiety disorder”, or social phobia, is a condition characterized by an intense fear of social situations. Although I kinda hate the idea of slapping a label on something or officially “diagnosing” it as a disorder… This fear stems from worries about being judged, embarrassed, or negatively evaluated by others. “Symptoms” (or reactions) can include rapid heartbeat, sweating, trembling, and even nausea.
Ever been there?
Let me tell you an embarassing story… I literally had one of those moments in High School (and many similar awkward instances since) where my crush said hi to me… and I COULDN’T SPEAK! Like, I just stared. Dumfounded. Then when he said “what’s up?” I managed to get out the ultimate reply of a lifetime… what was that reply, you ask?: “the sky”
UGH… CRINGE!!!!!
Okay, back to the subject at hand 😉
The Impact of Social Anxiety on Everyday Life
Social anxiety can affect various aspects of life, making it difficult to:
- Initiate conversations
- Attend social gatherings
- Perform in front of an audience
- Form and maintain relationships
Some Great Steps to Overcome Social Anxiety… or so i’m learning!
- Acknowledge Your Anxiety
The first step is recognizing and accepting that you have social anxiety. Understand that it’s a common issue and you are not alone in this struggle. Acknowledgement is empowering and sets the foundation for change.
- Educate Yourself
Learn about social anxiety and its triggers. This can help demystify the condition and provide you with practical insights into what exacerbates your “symptoms”.
My favorite way of educating myself is by reading. One of the books I like is Think Faster Talk Smarter plus there’s a lot of others linked below.
- Seek Professional Help
Consider therapy, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). CBT is highly effective in treating social anxiety by helping you reframe negative thought patterns and develop healthier perceptions of social interactions. This does work despite the social stigmas… just sayin.
- Gradual Exposure
Gradual exposure to social situations can desensitize you to anxiety-provoking scenarios. Start with less intimidating situations and gradually move to more challenging ones.
- Develop Social Skills
Invest time in learning effective communication skills. This includes active listening, maintaining eye contact, and understanding body language. Improved social skills can enhance interactions and reduce anxiety. And my fave?? READ SOME AWESOME BOOKS TO HELP YOU WITH THIS!! I’ve linked some of my favorites in this post. Check them out below.

- Engage in Self-Care
Prioritize activities that nurture your physical, emotional, and mental well-being. Regular exercise, a healthy diet, and sufficient sleep play crucial roles in boosting overall confidence.
- Practice Positive Self-Talk
Replace self-criticism with positive affirmations. Encourage yourself with kind words and focus on your strengths rather than your perceived flaws.
- Step Out of Your Comfort Zone
Pushing your boundaries can be an exhilarating way to build confidence. Try new activities, meet new people, and embrace challenges that come your way.
- Reflect on Past Successes

- Seek Constructive Feedback
Constructive feedback from trusted friends or mentors can provide valuable insights. Use this feedback to grow and improve without letting it impact your self-esteem negatively.
Building Lasting Confidence
- Maintain a Growth Mindset
Adopt a growth mindset by viewing challenges as opportunities to learn and grow. Embrace failures as part of the learning process rather than a reflection of your worth.
- Surround Yourself with Positive Influences
Surrounding yourself with supportive and positive individuals can significantly impact your confidence levels. Avoid toxic relationships that bring you down, and cultivate connections that uplift you.
- Keep Practicing
Consistency is key to building lasting confidence. Continually apply the strategies you’ve learned, and over time, interacting socially will become less daunting.
4. Embrace Your WEIRD
After all… never lose sight of who you are just to “fit in”.
Conclusion
Overcoming social anxiety and boosting self-confidence is a journey, not a destination. It requires patience, persistence, and a willingness to step outside your comfort zone. This one is the kicker. Who wants to step out of their comfort zone??? But I promise, the more you do it, the easier it gets! Just like working out, or pretty much anything you continually practice!
By implementing these strategies, you can transform your social interactions and embrace a more confident, fulfilling life. Remember, you’re not alone in this journey, and every step you take towards overcoming social anxiety brings you closer to the empowered, confident self you deserve to be.
